Emission classes

Products that are low in emissions are awarded the EMICODE® EC2 label. This class fulfils the basic requirements for being granted the EMICODE® label.

The highest class EMICODE® EC1 has proven itself over many years as a standard for products that are very low in emissions. The materials awarded this label comply with very stringent health and environmental requirements.

The premium class EMICODE® EC1PLUS  defines the limit of what is technically feasible today. Introduced in 2010, it sets even higher and stricter limit values than category EC1.

Some EMICODE® labels contain a grey “R” in the background. This stands for “regulated” and was introduced for products that are (very) low in emissions, but still require occupational safety measures like waering protective gloves or goggles when being used. Despite the required safety measures during use, these products still warrant the EMICODE® label on account of their emission characteristics.

EMICODE supplement “R” omitted

At its meeting on April 4, 2019, the Technical Advisory Council decided to remove the supplement “R” from the EMICODE® label. The “R” was only relevant for reasons of occupational safety and health. It did not indicate any special emission requirements relevant for the end consumer. Furthermore, the significance of the “R” remained largely unknown in the market. Existing licenses and labels will remain valid until the 5-year period for licenses has expired.
