Take a look under the carpet

What you can do for a healthy indoor climate

Our home should be pleasantly warm and cosy – especially in the autumn and winter time. Carpeted floors can help a great deal: They are warm to the feet, slip-proof and offer high walk-on comfort combined with good sound insulation. In order to ensure that carpets resist wear and tear for as long as possible and do not form waves, it is advisable to glue them to the subfloor over the entire surface. Solvent-free adhesives guarantee a healthy indoor climate and are easily recognizable by quality seals like EMICODE®.

If you like to walk around in socks or barefoot in your home, you will appreciate the warmth and comfort of a carpet under your feet. The advantage for allergy sufferers is that the airborne dust is bound in the carpet from where it can be easily vacuumed off every few days. Today, textile floor coverings come in all kinds of colors, patterns and formats, thus offering their owners a wide range of design options for their homes.

Loose-lay is often chosen for installing wall-to-wall carpeting. However, in rooms subject to high traffic like the hallway or children’s rooms, it is recommended to glue the carpet firmly to the subfloor. This makes carpets more hard-wearing and extends their service life. It also prevents the formation of waves, caused for example by chair castors. If underfloor heating was installed, there is no other choice than full-surface bonding. With no air space between carpet and subfloor, the heat is transferred faster and more directly to the room. This prevents energy losses and saves heating costs.

When buying carpets, seals such as GuT (Association of Environmentally Friendly Carpets) help you identify good quality and avoid harmful substances. However, to ensure an odorless and healthy home, it’s just as important to know what’s underneath the carpet. For this reason, make sure to always use solvent-free dispersion adhesives for fixing the carpet.

The good thing for consumers is that there are reliable quality seals that they can put their trust in. For more than 20 years, GEV EMICODE® has been testing and certifying building and installation products for their compliance with predefined emission limits. If these products carry the EC1 seal, residents can be sure that the air inside their homes is largely unpolluted.

Carpets: Hardly any other floor covering radiates such warmth and comfort as a carpet. It is warm to the feet and sound-absorbing. On the other hand, when glued to the entire surface, it offers high stability and prevents the formation of waves. Solvent-free adhesives with the EMICODE® EC1 seal are recommended for this purpose. The eco-label is only awarded to building products that are particularly low in emission and thus guarantee a healthy, pollution-free home.
