Primary task and objective

The main task of GEV is the promotion of consumer protection, occupational safety and environmental protection in the field of building chemicals and adhesives. The association pursues an open information policy and supports cross-vendor cooperation with all partners in the industry. Any progress towards a healthy indoor climate can only be achieved if all parties involved pull together. Consumers, contractors and manufacturers must take part in this process and jointly work towards high-quality low-emission products.

The first and foremost goal of GEV was to give the market a tool that allows users an impartial assessment of the available products and enables them to compare products regarding their VOC emission characteristics. For this purpose the EMICODE® classification system was created.

Licensing

Once a manufacturer applies for licensing one of his products, it is tested for its emission behavior by an independent analytical laboratory according to a defined, standardized test method. Based on the scientifically determined measurement data, the manufacturer is granted a license that assigns the respective EMICODE® class to his product.

This license then entitles the manufacturer to label and promote his product with the trademark-protected EMICODE® seal. Manufacturers whose products bear this label undertake to manufacture these products under quality-controlled conditions so that they comply with the EMICODE® specifications at all times.

Quality assurance

Better safe than sorry. True to this motto, GEV as the supervisory body monitors the licensed product claims from the very start.

Without the manufacturers’ knowledge, EMICODE®- licensed products (chosen at random) are purchased in the free market and subjected to rigorous long-term tests by internationally recognized testing institutes to determine their emission behavior.

Any non-compliance with the prescribed limit values is severely punished. Manufacturers whose products do not comply with the EMICODE® quality claim must pay the costs of testing. In addition, they are obliged to remedy deficiencies in production and to resubmit the products from new batches to new tests carried out in the same way.  Repeated non-compliance can lead to withdrawal of the license and, in the worst case, loss of all EMICODE® certification rights.

The monitoring results of recent years show that checks are the only way to maintain the necessary discipline required to produce optimum product quality. To this day, EMICODE® is the only VOC label on the market that is subject to regular and strict quality controls, thus offering the highest possible consumer protection as regards indoor air hygiene and healthy living.
