Your home – a healthy oasis of well-being

In Germany, there is a growing trend towards building apartments with more living space. As a result, the area occupied by walls, floors and ceilings in our homes is also increasing. This, in turn, can lead to higher emissions of harmful substances according to information published by the German Federal Environmental Agency. It is therefore essential to use building and installation materials that ensure healthy living so that residents can enjoy an oasis of well-being in their own four walls.

Tip 1: Choose the right building materials

People spend most of their days indoors, surrounded by walls, floors and ceilings. It is exactly for this reason that we need to pay special attention to choosing building and installation products that ensure healthy living. Possible emissions from the building materials used in our homes – but also from floor coverings and furniture – may otherwise cause serious health problems. Symptoms like headaches, sleep disorders, allergies or breathing problems can be attributed to the harmful substances emitted by building materials.

Tip 2: Regular (purge) ventilation

Especially in new buildings, possible health problems of the residents can be triggered by harmful emissions. Since newly built houses are more and more airtight, natural air exchange rates are decreasing. It is therefore important to ensure a daily exchange of air – in the warmer seasons preferably several times a day. Purge or cross ventilation periods of 5 to 10 minutes help improve the indoor climate and reduce high levels of air humidity. As a positive side effect, also the risk of mold growth is reduced.

Tip 3: Put your trust in EMICODE®-certified products

Products that are low in emissions and can be used without hesitation are identified by reliable quality seals like EMICODE®. For more than 20 years now, GEV EMICODE® has been testing and certifying various building products like adhesives, joint sealants, fillers and primers with regard to their health and environmental compatibility. Based on the most stringent test criteria and an internationally recognized evaluation system, the EMICODE® seal is awarded to products that feature the lowest possible emissions. Unannounced spot checks ensure that the prescribed limit values are observed.
